The times changin' again

We are in a unique moment in history. The internet and in this particular case Digg has changed the balance of power with regards to the media. Just 4 years ago in 2004, a similar attack by the Swift Boat 527 group was devastatingly effective. And played a major role in the defeat of Senator Kerry.

It is a certainty that the status quo is not willing to watch power slip from their hands. At this moment they are plotting to restore their position of absolute dominance over the flow of information. We must be vigilant and be prepared for a battle to keep this from happening.

At the same time we should take full advantage of the opening that has been created. Now is the time to speak out forcefully and courageously. We The People must use the weapons at our disposal. In this battle the pen is mightier than the sword.

Rather than fighting for the "right to bear arms" we should be focusing on fighting for the "right to freedom of the internet". Today a gun or a rifle would be of little use in the hands of individual citizens in a battle against a tyrannical form of government, but the internet is a powerful weapon that can prevent the takeover of our government by would be tyrants.

It is my belief that we are at the cusp of a new age. In these revolutionary times, we have the ultimate power to choose our future. There are a few alternate future realities that could emerge. According to quantum physics, perhaps multiple futures are possible. The future could be one of increased democratization and freedom, or one of centralized power and repression. It is really up to us. Ultimately we will get the form of government that we deserve.

"The times they are a changin' " by Bob Dylan 1964

Come gather 'round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone.
If your time to you
Is worth savin'
Then you better start swimmin'
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come writers and critics
Who prophesize with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'.

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'.
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'.

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast
As the present now
Will later be past
The order is
Rapidly fadin'.
And the first one now
Will later be last
For the times they are a-changin

A digg post just went viral titled "2012: The Year The Internet Ends"

http://ipower.ning.com/netneutrality

While I don't know if the specific thing they are warning about is true, it does make sense as I have described in this post that the status quo will try to take back control of information.

This is why I say in my post that the fight for "the right to a free internet" is the modern equivalent to the fight for "the right to bear arms". It should be added as an amendment to the constitution.
